The Work of a Divine Agency

 by Novice Francois Levannier

A Course in Miracles defines a ‘miracle’ as a shift in perception. I absolutely agree! This is a gift that keeps on giving, as our perception defines how we experience everything about our life.

I also love the traditional definition of a miracle: 'A surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws, and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.' Those miracles remind us of a God that has dominion over all things. And isn’t it so reassuring--and inspiring--to know that our Best Friend has that much power, and can help us through anything with HIS/HER Will, creating on Earth as it is in Heaven?

Years ago, I was traveling and broke. My teeth were also broken, from years of abuse in my youth as a wild party boy. They desperately needed care, including multiple crowns and a root canal. My teeth had been my nemesis, bringing memories of horrifying past interventions, including one where I almost passed out in the middle of a bloody surgery. I knew I needed God, and so I prayed for a miracle.

Miracle number one: A friend of the family named Caroline, whom I had only met a couple of times before, just happened to be a good dentist. She had become a dentist thanks to a benefactor who paid for her studies, and for some reason she really liked me (I have no idea why ;)). Because of the way her training was gifted to her, she had vowed to use it to give back whenever she was moved to. Knowing that I was only in France for a short visit before heading to my next adventure, she set aside an entire day to take care of my mouth! But that was only the first miracle; the next was even more surprising.

On that day, Caroline’s last task was the root canal. Unfortunately, her drill bit broke and got stuck at the bottom of my root! She was exhausted and decided to call it a day. She put a temporary cement patch over the exposed root, with the intention of figuring out how to get this piece of metal out of me the following morning.

She didn’t tell me what had happened, but that night was intense! My nerves were a mess from all the prodding and drilling, and my jaw felt tight and sore. I prayed. The next morning, Caroline proceeded with her work and finished without a hitch. Once she was done, however, she looked at me with questioning eyes. Then she seemed to make up her mind and told me of the rare and unfortunate drill bit accident that had happened the day before. She said, “I had no idea how to remove the piece of metal, and but when I looked in your mouth this morning, the drill -bit had miraculously manifested on the other side of the cement patch, where I could simply grab it. There is no reasonable, scientific explanation for this! I think I like your God!”

This moment was poignant for me, not so much because I was now “fixed”, but because I had experienced a miraculous closeness with my Maker, who is also my best friend. I knew then that my God knows my heart, and loves me more than I could ever imagine. There is nothing in the world I need to fear. I can walk courageously, knowing that I am perfectly looked after, far beyond any rhyme or reason.
