Change Is a Miracle

 by Rev. Miriam Karell

Every day for the past month, I take a pause break and sit with our orchid plants to observe the buds blooming. Each bud slowly grows to a point where it seems it has no other place to go but spread open. The movement is microscopic and intentional, and the only consistency is change. Watching this incredible beauty unfold before my eyes gave me a whole new appreciation for change and where we are in the world right now.

I began to sit with change as a good friend and was shown all the ways our lives are dependent upon change - how life itself is birthed through change. In this exploration, I was able to tap into an aliveness I never felt before. I could feel an inherent joy tone in all existence: the dark, the messy, the tame, the bright, the peaceful, the chaotic, the expansive, the contracted. It was as if my eyesight was sharpened and all around me became exquisitely vibrant. As I sat in this space, I realized that change itself is a miracle. It is a blessing we are given in each moment. All we have to do is find the gratitude.

One day
you will sit down with change
a smile will crack through your body
as a hatching egg
leaving you open like the wind
that carries seedlings to distant valleys
and ecstatically peaceful
like blades of grass absorbing sunlight
in a hidden meadow
In that silent stillness, you will know
how to thank your most trusted friend
